New wireless technologies rolling out inside gadgets in significant numbers this year can fundamentally change how we do everything from buying a movie ticket and paying for a tank of gas to how we watch TV and stay healthy.
The technologies are Bluetooth 4.0, Near Field Communications and a new version of Wi-Fi called 802.11ac that, together, should become ubiquitous in just a few years.
Right now you might already own gadgets with some of these technologies inside, but you probably haven’t used them yet. Apple’s iPhone 4S was among the first phones released with Bluetooth 4.0 last year. Now Apple ships the technology inside the iPad and all of its laptops while leading competitor Samsung has put both Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC inside the Galaxy S III.
